Troop 27 is Growing

Troop 27 added 5 new members recently, as part of our Fall Recruiting drive.  The troop now has 25 members, an all-time high since the Troop was started in 2007.

Next up is our Webelos Open House, scheduled for November 14th, at the Nichols Center.

Our Newest Eagle Scouts


Aidan Toney and Robert Zusy became Eagle Scouts 26 and 27 on January 4, 2017.  Congratulations Eagles!


Brenden Rivera, Jackson Plymale and Everett Ruuska became Eagle Scouts 23 through 25 on November 15, 2016.  Congratulations Eagles!


Nate Waltz became Eagle Scout #22 on June 13, 2016.

 

New Scoutmaster Takes Over


On November 17, 2014 Scoutmaster John Ohlson handed over the role of Scoutmaster to Adam Plymale, who will lead the Troop in 2015 and beyond.  After 11 years as a Scout Leader, the last 7 as Scoutmaster of Troop 27, John has been appointed to the role of Activities Chair for the Pacific Harbors Council.  We wish Adam luck in his new role, and continued success with the Troop in the coming years.

Troop 27 of Fox Island awarded the rank of Eagle to seven of its members on March 14, 2015.  From Left: Thomas Ichiyama, Mitchell Baltmiskis, Ian Collins, Mason Yonkers, Matthew Wild, Jarrett Siler and Daniel Crone.  These seven scouts were the last of the first 20 Eagles in Troop 27's seven year history!

Matthew Wild Makes Eagle!

Matthew Wild, Troop 27's sixteenth Eagle Scout, passed his board of review on December 10, 2014.  He is the third Scout in Troop 27 to complete his Eagle Scout requirements in 2014. 

Mason Yonkers Makes Eagle!

Mason Yonkers, Troop 27's fifteenth Eagle Scout, passed his board of review on November 12, 2014.  He is the second Scout in Troop 27 to complete his Eagle Scout requirements in 2014. 

Ian Nation Makes Eagle!

Ian Nation, Troop 27's fourteenth Eagle Scout, passed his board of review on April 21, 2014.  He is the first Scout in Troop 27 to complete his Eagle Scout requirements in 2014.  His Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Saturday, June 21st, at the Gig Harbor Sportsman's Club.

Thomas Ichiyama Makes Eagle

Thomas Ichiyama, Troop 27's thirteenth Eagle Scout, passed his board of review on November 25, 2013.  He is the second Scout in Troop 27 to complete his Eagle Scout requirements in 2013.

Eagle Scout ProjectIan Nation Eagle Project Complete

Ian Nation recently completed his Eagle Service Project, adding a 1600 square foot expansion to the Fox Island Community Garden, by adding an 8' tall deer fence.

The expansion adds an additional 45' x 70' plot to the popular garden, which provides gardening space for Island residents who do not have sufficient space in their own yards for gardening.

 

 

 

 

 

Ian gets some assistance attaching the deer screen to a fence post, putting the finishing touches on his Eagle Scout service project.


Colin Rivera Makes Eagle!

Colin Rivera, Troop 27's twelfth Eagle Scout, passed his board of review on August 12, 2013.  He is the first Scout in Troop 27 to complete his Eagle Scout requirements in 2013.


Colin's Uncle Christopher Tatara and Grandfather Lee Tatara (both Eagle Scouts), administer the "Eagle Charge" at his Eagle Court of Honor on October 12, 2013.

Five Eagle Scouts in 2012!

A five-way Eagle Court of Honor was held on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at 2:00 PM at the Sehmel Homestead Pavilion, to honor the five Scouts who earned Eagle in 2012:
Sravan Konda, Spencer Godfrey, Nathan David
and Cameron Allen. 


The Eagle Scouts are joined by US Representative Derek Kilmer, who was the keynote speaker at the Court of Honor.

  • Cameron Allen Makes Eagle!
Cameron Allen, Troop 27's eleventh Eagle Scout, passed his board of review on January 4, 2013.  He is the fifth Scout in Troop 27 to complete his Eagle Scout requirements in 2012.
  • Colin Wilson Makes Eagle!
    Colin Wilson, Troop 27's tenth Eagle Scout passed his board of review on
    December 29, 2012.  He is the fourth Scout in Troop 27 to earn the Centennial Eagle Scout badge, marking the 100th anniversary of the Eagle Scout Award.

     

  • Nathan David Makes Eagle!

    Nathan David, Troop 27's ninth Eagle Scout passed his board of review on
    December 29, 2012.  He is the third Scout in Troop 27 to earn the Centennial Eagle Scout badge, marking the 100th anniversary of the Eagle Scout Award.

     

  • Spencer Godfrey Makes Eagle!

    Spencer Godfrey, Troop 27's eighth Eagle Scout passed his board of review on
    August 13, 2012.  He is the second Scout in Troop 27 to earn the Centennial Eagle Scout badge, marking the 100th anniversary of the Eagle Scout Award.

    Sravan Konda, Troop 27's Seventh Eagle Scout passed his board of review on
    April 16, 2012.  He is the first Scout in Troop 27 to earn the Centennial Eagle Scout badge, marking the 100th anniversary of the Eagle Scout Award.

    Six Eagles Honored at Joint Eagle Ceremony
    April 9, 2011

Eagle Alex Ohlson, Jesse Long, Grant Toepfer, Jensen Bond, Max Reetz and Dallas Thornton receive their Eagle Awards at a six-way Eagle Court of Honor on April 9, 2011, at the Fox Island Yacht Club.  Topping off an exciting year in 2010, which included a trip to the National Jamboree, and six Eagle Scout projects, the boys were honored at Troop 27's first Eagle Court of Honor. .


Dallas Thornton, Jesse Long, Max Reetz, GrantToepfer, Jensen Bond and Alex Ohlson received their Eagle Awards on April 9, 2011.

Eagle Dallas Thornton passed his Eagle Scout Board of Review on March 14, 2011, becoming the sixth Eagle Scout from Troop 27.

  • Troop 27 Celebrates Three Year Anniversary,
    Announces First Five Eagle Scouts

    December 16, 2010
    Eagle Alex Ohlson and Jesse Long pass their Eagle Scout Boards of Review on December 16, 2010, becoming the first two Eagle Scouts from Troop 27.
    Grant Toepfer and Jensen Bond passed their Eagle boards on December 21, 2010, and become the third and fourth Eagle Scouts from Troop 27. 
    Max Reetz
    passed his Eagle Board of Review on January 24, 2011, making him the fifth Eagle Scout.


    New Eagle Scouts Alex Ohlson, Jesse Long, Grant Toepfer, Jensen Bond and Max Reetz move their names from Life to Eagle on the Troop 27 advancement board.

  • Troop 27 earns the 2010 Centennial Quality Unit Award
    December 1, 2010
    For the third year in a row, Troop 27 has completed the requirements for earning the 2010 Centennial Quality Unit Award.  This award is given to Troops who run a quality Scouting program, which includes trained leadership, advancement, participation in outdoor program and outings, membership retention and recruitment.
  • Venture Crew #27 Formed
    November 18, 2010
    On Thursday, November 18th, the final paperwork for Venture Crew #27 was submitted to the Council Office, marking the beginning of a new Scouting unit on Fox Island.  Ten new Venturers make up the new Crew, including three girls.  Visit the VentureCrew27.com website for more information on how to join Venturing.
     
  • Fall Advancement Report:
    November 8, 2010
    Completing the final Merit Badges for Eagle this month are: Alex Ohlson and Jesse Long.  All that is left for them to reach Eagle is their board of reviews.

    Alex, Jesse, Grant Toepfer and Jensen Bond each completed their Eagle Service Projects this month.
    First Class Reaching the rank of First Class are Travis Gurr and Colin Wilson
    Tenderfoot Tenderfoot badge recipients are Cameron Allen and Mason Yonkers.

    August 9, 2010
    Star Badge Sravan Konda completed the requirements for Star Scout while at Camp Hahobas, in addition to breaking all-time records for Troop 27 in merit badges earned while at camp, with 11 merit badges completed!
    First Class Mitchell Baltmiskis earned the First Class badge.

    The boys were quite busy this summer, with 56 merit badges earned at Camp Hahobas and the 2010 National Jamboree.

     

  • FICRA Nature Center added to Cache To Eagle Project
    May 4, 2010
    With over 10 Eagle Scout projects now making up the Fox Island Nature Center complex, it was appropriate for it to be added to the "Cache to Eagle" geocache project.  This addition to the many Eagle Scout caches across America helps bring attention to the hard work and community service Scouting brings to Fox Island, and celebrates the 100 year anniversary of Scouting in America.  This cache involves multiple 'finds', and requires the geocachers to navigate around the Nature Center's trails to find the final cache.

  • Spring Advancement Report:
    May 10, 2010
    Life Badge Alex Ohlson became the first Scout in Troop 27 to complete the requirements for the Life Rank on April 18th.  Rounding out the merit badges he earned was the 50 mile bike trek for the Cycling merit badge, which he rode with Jesse Long.
    Other Scouts completing the Life Rank include: Jensen Bond, Jesse Long, Dallas Thornton, Grant Toepfer, Deno Borghi, and Max Reetz.
    First Class Jamie Gorman earned the First Class badge.

    Ten new Scouts have Joined Troop 27 since the beginning of 2010.
    Johnny Smith, Ian Collins, Cameron Allen, Matthew Coyne, Daniel Crone, Jarrett Siler, Bobby Banks, Alex Lalena, Ian Bunker Matt Coyne, and Colin Rivera have signed up since January!
    New Adult Leaders include Eric Wilson, Maria Ichiyama, Nick Lalena and Craig Smith.

  • Troop 27 Earns "Troop of the Year" Award!
    May 2, 2009

    At the 2008 Thunderbird awards banquet, Troop 27 was awarded Troop of the Year honors.  Representatives from the Troop leadership were on hand to accept the award, presented by Luana Owen of the Thunderbird District.

    John Ohlson was also named "Scoutmaster of the Year", and Bill Reetz received Honorable Mention as "Committee Member of the Year".

    February 13, 2009
    Troop 27's newest memberTroop 27 announces it's newest member, Jamie from Pack 264 in Gig Harbor.  Jamie earned his Arrow of Light award, and earned all 20 Webelos Activity pins while in Cub Scouts. 

    Senior Patrol Leader Grant & Assistant Senior Patrol Leader Alex were there to greet Jamie at the end of the Cub Scout Trail, and welcomed him to Troop 27.

  • Troop 27 Attends Second Klondike Derby
    January 25, 2009
    Nine Scouts from Troop 27 competed in their second annual Klondike Derby.  Grant Toepfer took second place in the Knot Gauntlet, and the "Vicoubra" patrol (a combination of Vikings, Cougars and Cobras) took first place in Orienteering, and third place in the Log Pull competition.

Quality Unit 2008In our first full year in operation, Troop 27 earned the 2008 Quality Unit Award.  This award is given to troops who deliver a quality program, including trained leaders, annual planning, recruiting of boys and adult volunteers, youth retention, a robust outdoor activity program.

    Eagle Scout Michael Lorey from Indiana, joins Troop 27 as the newest Assistant Scoutmaster.  His first outing with the group was the Lake Christine backpack trip to the Glacier View Wilderness area.

  • Spring Recruitment Drive Nets 6 New Members
    April 8, 2008
    Six new members of Troop 27 joined as a result of our Spring recruitment drive.  Welcome to new members Mike & Matt Garries, Dario Martinez, Jensen Bond, Spencer Godfrey and Logan Portteus.  Four of the new members form the newest Patrol, the Viking Patrol, and Jensen Bond was elected Patrol Leader.
     
  • Arrow of Light Award Recipients

    Four members of Troop 27 were presented with the Arrow Of Light award at the Pack 202 Blue & Gold Banquet today.  The award is the highest honor in Cub Scouting, and those who earned it were Alex Ohlson, Haydon Tieman, Dylan Payne and Nicholas Prindiville.

  • Troop Survives the Klondike Derby, Wins Awards!
    January 27, 2008
    The Cobra Patrol and Cougar Patrol sent members to their first annual Klondike Derby, held at Camp Delezene in Grays's Harbor County.  Braving 25 degree weather, the Scouts survived the cold nights, snow and rain, and competed against other troops in a variety of Scouting skills events.  Both patrols came away with awards; the Cougars won 3rd place and the Cobras won 1st place in the "Figure It Out" category, which featured pioneering skills.
     
  • Welcome New Members!
    January 13, 2008
    New members to join the Troop this month are David Saice, Deno Borghi, Dallas Thornton and Sasha Bill.  Welcome aboard!  Two new Patrols were formed at the January 8th meeting, and Patrol Leader elections were held for the Cougar Patrol and the Cobra Patrol.
     
  • First Advancement Award

    Troop 27's first advancement award was presented to Colt Martinson, who completed the requirements for the Scout badge.  Congratulations, Colt!
     
  • First Troop Meeting Held
    December 11, 2007
    Troop 27's first official meeting was held on December 11, 2007.  Charter members in attendance were Alex Ohlson, Haydon Tieman, Dylan Payne, Nicholas Prindiville, Colt Martinson, Max Reetz, and Grant Toepfer.  We tried our hand at 'high altitude' cooking, and formed our two patrols, and discussed Summer Camp & our upcoming adventure calendar.
     
  • Troop 27 Recruit Night
    December 4, 2007
    Troop 27 held it's first Open House recruit night on December 4th, at the Nichols Community Center, 690 9th Ave, Fox Island.  Boys aged 11 - 17 and their parents are encouraged to attend and find out more about Scouting.  Contact John Ohlson at 253-380-4100 for more information, and visit The Scout Zone to see what Scouting is all about.
     
  • Troop 27 Charter Submitted
    November 29, 2007
    After months of planning, recruiting and paperwork, the charter for Troop 27 has been accepted by the Pacific Harbors Council.
    The charter presentation will be at the Blue & Gold Banquet on February 28, 2008, at the Nichols Community Center on Fox Island.
     
  • Arrow Of Light Awards Earned
    November 28, 2007
    Five members of Fox Island's Pack 202 Webelos have completed their Arrow of Light award requirements.  The Arrow of Light is the highest award a Cub Scout can earn.  Arrow of Light recipients from Den 2 are Alex Ohlson, Haydon Tieman, Caleb Wilkerson, Dylan Payne, and Nathan Miller.
